How we Choose a Sire for our Breeding Program

Breeding goes far beyond the charming kitten photos and TikTok moments. Committed breeders invest significant time in testing each cat for genetic health, analyzing parental pedigrees, and researching desired traits and colors to enhance their lines. This thorough and often emotional journey ensures that every new addition to the breeding program is nurtured with care, dedication, and a focus on improving the overall health and quality of the breed.

Things we look for include when considering adding any cat, male or female to our breeding program, include;

Health and Genetic Testing:

We look for a history of parental excellent health and fertility, including genetic testing for common conditions like Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a heart condition prevalent in Maine Coons, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), and PK Deficiency as these are inheritable diseases. Furthermore, we will test for coat color genes and blood type to ensure breed purity and compatibility.
Temperament:

A good stud should possess a desirable temperament and a strong desire to breed, both of which are essential for a successful breeding process. This combination not only fosters a positive environment but also enhances the likelihood of producing healthy, well-adjusted offspring. Selecting a stud with these traits can significantly contribute to the overall success of a breeding program. A cuddly cat often translates to cuddly kittens; their affectionate nature can be passed down to the offspring. These qualities not only contribute to the overall health and well-being of the animals involved but also enhance the likelihood of producing healthy, well-adjusted, and loving kittens.
Pedigree and Registration:

A potential sire's pedigree and registration with major cat registries like The International Cat Association (TICA) and the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) is crucial for breeders. This practice maintains breed integrity by ensuring that the lineage is well-documented and free from genetic issues. Additionally, registered cats are often bred under strict guidelines, promoting good breeding practices that prioritize health and temperament. By adhering to these standards, breeders can contribute to the overall quality and reputation of the breed.

He adores engaging in games and often sprawls across the couch, eagerly seeking belly rubs, displaying a remarkably dog-like trait. Stan is characterized as quiet, inquisitive, exceedingly affectionate, and unwaveringly dedicated to his human family.

From the moment he joined our cattery as a tiny kitten, his infectious, puppy-like affection has completely captured our hearts. Every day, he seeks out cuddles, curling up next to us and purring louder than a freight train, filling our home with warmth and joy. His presence is so comforting that it often feels like having a gentle giant by our side.

With a sturdy build reminiscent of a brick house and a lineage boasting stunning champion bloodlines, we anticipate that Aslan will grow even larger and more majestic than our beloved Stan. His physical traits are matched only by his whimsical personality. Each cat in our home has developed their own enthusiastic fan club (an easy task with a family as large as ours), and Aslan is undoubtedly mine. He has a special way of checking in on me, making sure I’m never alone, and often vying for lap space against our other fluffy companion, Potato. The playful rivalry between the two is always entertaining to witness, as they both bring a unique energy to our household.

Aslan's loving nature and vibrant personality have made him an amazing father. His gentle affection and playful spirit brighten every moment spent with him. It's truly wonderful to witness how these heartfelt traits have been passed on to his kittens! Each one displays a unique blend of their father’s warmth and liveliness. From their loud, rumbling purrs to their constant need for lap space, and their stunning smoke and mackerel patterns, they are a daily reminder of Aslan’s influence. Every day with him and his kittens is a joy, filled with laughter and affection.
